A LETTER TO AN EARLIER SELF

Lucky Khambule

From the photographed pages

This photograph shows one notebook spread. The passage begins within a longer story; earlier pages are not included here.

She worked as a Domestic worker. Like I said earlier, she was seriously ill and was in hospital. I went home and saw her in hospital that weekend in November. I had to return to school as I had a paper to write the following Monday.

Sadly, she passed away that Monday, But they chose not to tell me for the whole week. But was informed that we had to Back Home again on Saturday that week.

By this time I did not know why we all had to go Home, no one had a courage to tell me.

It was only when we got home, when I saw a lot people at home and my Aunt just burst to tears, that I realised something was wrong. When I got in the house, I saw the white veil covering my late mother. It was actually her funeral that day. It was the toughest day of my life yet. I was young and she was everything to me, there she was gone.
